The Background Story

So a few weeks ago I was invited to the Malmaison Belfast to try out their new Summer Menu. Technically I wasn’t invited it was Ian & Ruth but thanks to ohhSocial I was able to tag along.

Malmaison is a member of the Frasers Hospitality group consisting of 15 boutique Hotels throughout the UK each with its own unique charm.


I’d been to the Mal a couple of times, for meetings mostly but never had a chance to taste their food. So I was eager and ready to eat!

I donned a sensible attire, dark navy skinny jeans (stretch fit), a pink shirt (with room for food belly), a pair of brown brogues and an oversized trench coat (are you seeing a trend?).

IMG_0338Like the name suggests it runs throughout Summer across all the Malmaison chains. It’s followed only by the Autumn menu, which usually comes out around September…

I’ve never really thought about a restaurant menu before or even wondered where their produce comes from. Our maître d was kind enough to explain that each item is chosen based on availability of the food. A head Chef will build a menu based on fresh produce that is continuous throughout the season. Once they narrow down the choices they check each hotel can acquire the same products and then it is rolled out to the whole chain to keep consistency, clever ain’t it! You’re probably thinking well that’s not rocket science but it’s one of those things you don’t give much thought to, well unless you’re a Chef.

The Food


With Ian in tow we settled into a nice little area of the brassiere and waited for the wonderful Ruth of Willow Lane to arrive.


The menu is fixed price, two courses for £19.95 or three courses for £24.95 with the option of ordering appetizers and from either menu sides. (The sides on the summer menu don’t make much sense to me with the dishes but I’m sure some people would go for them, we had truffle & Parmesan pommes frites from the main menu a little hard to resist really) regardless still a bargain.


The Appetizer

Roman focaccia, Serrano ham & Salsa verde (one between 3 was more than enough)

The Starter

Summer pea & pancetta croquettes – Crisp polenta crumb croquettes filled with pancetta, summer peas & Béchamel, with truffle mayonnaise. Yummers!

The Main

Tiger prawn chilli & cherry tomato linguini – Fresh linguini pasta with grilled tiger prawns, peas & baby plum tomatoes, served with a bottle of our homemade garlic & chilli oil. I was really looking forward to this but I found it a little bland, possibly needed an arrabiata


Strawberry cheesecake – Classic baked vanilla cheesecake topped with Stewarts of Tayside Scottish strawberry compôte & strawberry sorbet. I always need something sweet after dinner and this did the trick.

If you haven’t already made it down to the Mal for dinner then I would strongly suggest that you do. They make it nice and easy to book a table on their site, which also showcases the other amazing offers they have for customers. Pair that with the great offers from ohhSocial and you’ll be in for a great night out in the city centre.

I’m really looking forward to trying their all you can eat Sunday Carvery, I think I might wear sweat pants to that one.
